HAIR UPDATE: 2017 HAIR GOALS, ALMOST CUT OFF ALL MY HAIR, DEALING AND REVIVING MOISTURE OVERLOAD ON 4C HAIR.

lol this is the revived hair, not my hair when it was just doing its thing ...

....Perhaps this is the moment for which you have been created - Esther 4 vs 14.

Hey guys....
I know, I know.....it's been like what? A year? *shame face* I have been away for the longest time, didn't abandon y'all I promise. I just wasn't about this blog so much because I have nobody to take me pictures, and its easier to just make videos for YouTube and edit. 2016 was also a really tough year for me, had its shares of ups and downs but it ended on a really high note. lol going to make a video on this whenever I come back to the tube. I just got a lot of requests on hair this..hair that lol and a while back people were asking me what went wrong with the blog. Never knew anybody read lol. So I am gna be here more often, can't promise how often because I am currently busy studying for exams, but Ild try to have up a post or two a month.

Anyways enough of the ramblings and on to the reason we are here...
Uhm. Happy new year guys. I know it's almost Easter but better late than never lol. I have very simple hair goals for the year which is basically length retention. I made a lot of hair mistakes in my second year of being natural lol, and I really want to share all of them so that you guys would have more length at any stage of your hair Journey. I would be doing that hopefully and documenting my third year of being natural. Turned three years natural about a week ago *does schmoney dance*

DEALING WITH OVERMOISTURIZED HAIR AND HOW I REVIVED IT.

Overmoisturizing is a what??? Lol this girl is probably reaching?Well... no she is not. Overmoisturizing is a thing guys and it's very real. It happens to 4c hair as well. I am speaking from experience, I almost got my whole hair shaved out of frustration y'all.

What is overmoisturizing?? There's a balance our hair maintains that makes it look healthy, bouncy and beautiful. This is the balance between protein and moisture. If you go overboard on each side, this can be a problem. If you over use protein, you hair gets dry and brittle and snaps and just becomes like iron sponge basically. If you overuse moisture, your hair because really soft, weak, dull, limp, doesn't hold curls and just not healthy. lol someone might give me side eye like girl what?? Like being soft is all Ild ever really want. lol I understand that but there is a balance. Hair that is too soft aka elastic hair is an issue.

Got a protein treatment before I came back to Nigeria and damn! My hair was beautiful. I used the Aphogee-2-step treatment and tbh, that was the first time ever getting a proper protein treatment. Before that point, I just felt my hair was too soft ( not overmoisturized) and I wanted to add some strength and thickness to it. I did this and my hair was so beautiful guys, I even blow-dried it and did a length check that got me a lot of dms I haven't all opened when I posted on Instagram.
lol the length check picture I put on my IG, I was about 2years and say 8months here.

I got my hair colored last year in October. It looks more like highlights anyways cus I was tryna go for the ombré look. Never gotten my hair dyed ever so my hair didn't take the color so well. I am supposed to give it a second pass but I have put that idea on hold because I am not tryna get my hair to fall off.
Well, I read that the downside of coloring your hair is dryness. So instead of waiting for the hair to get dry before acting lol I decided to take prophylactic measures . *lol these medical students and their grammar mtschw* lol well basically, I wanted to prevent the dryness so I don't have to deal with it. I started to moisturize my hair so much and over deep condition. I would leave my deep conditioner over night guys* weeps*.
If you actually do this, like everytime you deep condition, you are looking for trouble. Follow the directions on the bottle or can, the people who manufactured it wrote it for a reason. Putting in extra 2hours does not increase the effect or make your hair better or healthier. If you must stretch the time, 30mins is enough or at least don't make the going overtime a routine, maybe once a while for those times you are too lazy to wash out your conditioner, or you don't want to wash it off because your favorite show is on *lol we got to have those cheat days because guilty*
In all this trying to avoid my hair from getting dry, I never used protein.. because well? That would just bring in the dryness. So I wasn't even thinking of a balance. I was just going overboard with all the moisturizing products that I own and my hair became like cloth. Too soft aka elastic hair.
It still never dawned on me that my hair had gotten enough.
My hair was really soft at the point I noticed and it was barely drying. Like Ild put in products for a twistout and have it under a wig for one week and this hair will not dry. I was like uhm, I should use a blow-dryer. I opted for this one Sunday I was finna  go to church lol and my hair was just shrinking, because it had so much moisture..it never stretches. I used the blow-dryer which usually dries out my hair on a normal day. My hair dried but was still really soft. I started to feel it was the hair dye that weakened my hair.
you can see how limp and dull my hair looks here, I just had it blowdried in this picture.sigh!

lol see me shining my teeth in these pictures, probably won't be that excited if I knew I had moisture overload.
Started Dc-ing with three eggs every wash, but it never worked and I think the reason is because after using protein, I would still go and reload my hair with moisture (I used the intensive moisturizing therapy from twisted sisters). Intensive therapy tho?? What was I thinking? *sigh*. Nothing was helping so I decided to take off about 3inches of length, maybe if I had realized earlier that I was suffering from moisture overload.. I won't have to go that lane fam *weeps*

Anyways, I am also low-key happy that I got some of my ends snipped off. They were actually an embarrassment just that I feel the color made it more obvious and I won't have had to cut so much if I paid attention to my hair. I had my hair in protective styles twice before realizing what might be my plight. My hair dresser who is pretty amazing btw, kept saying that my hair was 'rubber hair" and all the time it made me really offended. I would snap back in defense that natural hair shrinks. One time I was making my hair downstairs, I noticed whenever she touched it, it would shed but i didn't pay any attention to it lol. My mom would touch my hair and say its too soft, its all these things you are rubbing on it, only one hair this and that lol..but I would always snap back offended and in defense , like! what do you know about hair???
lol my hair is growing back guys. did a quick front hair length check.

I took off my brazillian wool braids months later, did a pre-poo with palm oil, treated my hair because its been away for a while and did the LOC method..then proceeded to put my hair in twists all through the week so if I loosen it, I would rock a defined twist out. well did I get disappointed tho? My hair just never dried. it would dry on the outside but when I loosen it, it would be so soft like deep down there's moisture in it. I put my hair in puffs instead and it looked like I was one-year natural which was very annoying and whenever I touch it, it would be so soft and have so much knots in it. It had this chewing gum feel to it. Like you just know there is a problem somewhere. It held no curls, had no strength whatsoever and was so limp. I stopped moisturizing it but it just wasn't helping. I would try to style it in two pigtails and it would look so small. At this point I was even scared to put heat because I was scared it will burn my hair. It had no tensile strength whatsoever. I had tried looking for a protein treatment around me and couldnt find any. I would walk into stores and ask for the Aphogee-2-in-1 protein treatment and people would look at me like I had taken weed. Nobody understood what I was saying. I had not realized the reason the egg had stopped working was because of the use of the moisturizer heavily after the protein treatment which canceled out the effect.
I finally decided to cut my hair guys. lol yes you heard me! I WAS GOING TO START ALL OVER AGAIN!!!. I was on a call with someone and lamenting on how I am going to cut my hair when she told me that I should try egg and mayonnaise, that her sister tried it and it worked. Before the call, I was reading an article that said eggs can't revert moisture overload because it has really big particles that can't penetrate the hair. I saw people recommend Hair organics ORS hair mayonnaise but I had always seen it as having moisturizing effects aswell so I didnt want to try that yet. The egg mask was way cheaper and I decided to try it ( no harm in that).

REVIVING MY OVERMOISTURIZED HAIR.

1. I loosened whatever form my hair was( puff, twists) can't remember and finger detangled. I skipped the pre-poo I usually do because this just adds moisture to the hair and my hair had enough to last a whole year maybe, idk.

2. I washed my hair with a shampoo (picture below), I opted for this one because it is both a shampoo and conditioner, and since I was planning to skip every form of conditioning even the normal one after wash, I used this. I was skeptical at first to use this shampoo that has a conditioning effect, but I read the back and saw it contains some form of protein which is what we really want, right?

3. I would advice a Protein shampoo if you can get your hands on it but man! I wasn't about to walk into my beauty supply stores looking like I do drugs, so I let this pass knowing that they really wouldn't have it anyways.

4. After washing, I skipped every form of conditioning and let my hair dry for a while before going ahead to use the egg mask, which was basically three eggs whisked with a fork in a bowl.

5. I applied it to my pre-twisted hair and retwisted them back after putting egg on each section. I didn't add the mayonnaise as this has some moisturizing effects. I just strictly used the eggs.

6. Left this on for about an hour and 30mins, even had some on my face as a mask. I washed the egg off my hair with normal luke warm water. please avoid using hot water so that the egg doesn't boil on your strands.

7. Did a Rice water rinse after I had gotten off some of the water off my head with a microfiber towel. lol rice water what?? don't worry ild make a post about that sometime next week or whenever I wash my hair.

8. skipped my usual conditioners and went ahead to use shea butter to seal in the water on my head already and a little bit of a product I have been loving lately called hair wonder.

9. blow-dried my hair in sections and instantly felt the strength return. hair was soft which is due to the rice water but it was reasonably soft, the elasticity was gone and it looked so beautiful when I was done.

10. I put my hair in a braid out protective style and proceeded to wear a wig for a week.

11. didn't get up to one week because I was anxious to see how my hair turned out. I didn't do any moisturizing during the week. I just lightly rubbed my scalp with my salsa keratin oil moisturizer on day 3 and put some oil over my hair to lock that in and that was pretty much it.

12. had my braid- out taken out, my curls  are holding once more. combed it out and put it in a puff.

Went to sleep later that night with chunky twists in bantu knots and took it out this morning and girl say what???? MY HAIR IS BACK!!!.

13. Currently have my hair right now in chunky twists. I would go ahead and just wrap it around itself in a bantu knot when I am ready to go to bed. Even went out with my twists and had people ask if its my real hair lol. Idk my hair is so beautiful rn, I don't know what to do with myself lol.
chunky twists.

Currently working to find the balance and not neglect moisturizing and overdo the protein treatments because Protein overload is much harder to deal with. Lol grateful I didn't lose my hair even though my edges be snatching.

lol see my edges and the back of my hair looking ratchet but hopefully it will come through.
lol this is how my edges used to look fat. I was two years natural here. Jesus would fix this *hot tears*

I am going to get that back hopefully with Jesus on my side. I hope you guys learnt a thing or two from my mistakes lol. This was quite long but necessary. See more pictures of my hair guys >_<

hair is holding curls and looks way better now.

omg!!!!!

put it in a puff so you guys can see how much better
 it looks now.
